‘Despicable Me 4’ Opens with $120 Million Over Fourth of July Holiday

FRIDAY MORNING: Lighting/Universal Despicable Me 4 did $20.4 million on July 4th, which is +28% more than what Minions: Rise of Gru did on July 4th in 2022 which was $16 million. It is also +61% more than Despicable Me 3July 4 of $12.7 million, but DM4July 4th is in second place behind DM2‘s $24.5 million holiday income in 2013. Today will reveal how much this sixth Minions/Despicable Me universe movie is above or below $120 million Sunday, but it’s a strong take on the Independence Day frame nonetheless. The Friday-Monday starts for Minions: Rise of Gru was $123M. Ongoing cume for DM4 amounts to $47.6 million.

While DM4 With a -25% drop from opening day on Wednesday, most films saw large daily percentage increases on July 4, with titles in the top 10 seeing an average daily increase of +25%.

While 5-day forecasts are always hard to predict this far out, everything will become clear by Friday. Even at this level, Gru’s fourth chapter/sixth Minions title would still be a $70 million 3-day and $120 million 5 days. Interest in this group has not waned for the audience who gave it an A CinemaScore, the same rating as Chapters 1 and 2, and a notch higher Despicable Me 3’s A-. Generally it is the fifth A for the Minions/Despicable I franchise.

New Line’s Kevin Costner Title Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 made at 3,334 locations $1.1 million yesterday, for what seems like a $5.4 million 3-day and $7.8 million 5 days for a running total of $21.6 million Sunday. If this movie cost $50M (out of the franchise’s $100M total before P&A), it’s not even going to make that much at the domestic box office.

Since it is the 4th of July, don’t expect ticket sales to increase dramatically as many people are unable to purchase tickets due to the holiday. DM4 is expected to decline by around 20% today, if not less, while Inside Out 2 should remain the same as Wednesday.

The Despicable Me And Minions Universe has an ongoing series that has grossed $4.67 billion worldwide. The highest-grossing title in the franchise is 2015’s Minions with 1.1 billion dollars.
